I met a man last year in April at Mark Hoverson’s Leadership Branding event. This man drove there in desperation at the last minute. He knew who I was and found me in the hallway. Where's The First Place Your Eyes Go When You Look At The Image Below...? If you're like most people, your eyes immediately gravitated towards the upper left hand corner of the screen. What you're looking at is a screenshot of some Google search results using what's called a heatmap. In order to find out where users focus their attention the most when looking at a website, online research companies use heatmap studies where volunteers wear specially designed "headgear" while surfing the web that tracks their eye movements on the page. The picture above was taken from the results of thousands of users and the red, orange and yellow colors represent what areas people's eyes focused on the most. The purple x's represent clicks. As you can see, the upper left hand corner (the top free search engine listings) gets about ten times more "eyeball attention" and clicks than the rest of the page... Including the right hand side which is where the paid ads appear (PPC). This is pretty amazing when you consider the fact that our team used to generate an average of 9-10,000 clicks a day using nothing BUT the RIGHT HAND side of the page before the Google slaps happened. A lot of people gave up on Google after this but as you can see, there are still way more leads to be generated using the other side of the page, for free. Last night I hosted a webinar with Ferny Ceballos from SEO Networker where he revealed how he and his students have been getting top 10 Google search engine rankings - sometimes within days - using methods so simple they're almost embarrassing.
